If not for today’s Google Doodle, I would never have heard of the 17th century naturalist and artist Maria Sibylla Merian. And that would be a terrible shame, because her studies of flowers and insects are gorgeous. As in, I want ALL OF THEM:

They remind me a little of James Marsh’s Talk Talk album covers, which is never a bad thing. But anyway, read the linked article about Maria, it’s fascinating.
