Happy St. Piran’s Day!

Today, the 5th March is St Piran’s Day, the patron saint of tin miners.

It is said that St Piran was of Irish origin, and arrived in Cornwall in the 6th Century. Fast forward 15 Centuries and Cornwall’s favourite saint is still being celebrated by the patriotic Cornish. …

This video shows just how to make an authentic Cornish pasty, a traditional part of St. Piran’s Day celebrations. (Though really, any excuse to eat pasties will do.)

I am in awe of just how much filling this Cornish lady manages to pack into one pasty. And the crimping along the edge is lovely. Plus it’s being made for someone named Rebecca!

A little New Year’s gift for my patient readers

An excerpt from Chapter Two of SWIFT:

Cover of SWIFT by R.J. Anderson

[Ivy] was still wrestling with the question when she noticed the stranger extending his injured arm toward her, wincing all the while. “What are you doing?” she asked.

“I told you. Help me, and I’ll help you. Just do as I say.” He hesitated, then added with obvious reluctance, “Please.”

Ivy sighed. “What do you want me to do?”

“Take my hand, and slide your other hand under my elbow.”

Suppressing her distaste, Ivy reached out and took his limp, white fingers in her own. She had half expected to find his skin cold and slimy, as a spriggan’s ought to be—but his hand was warm, even feverish, in her grip. Gingerly she slipped her other hand beneath his swollen joint, feeling the dislocation. “What now?” she asked.

“Hold my elbow steady,” said the prisoner between his teeth, “and pull my wrist toward you. Not too fast, but—aaaaah!” There was a sickening pop beneath Ivy’s palm and he staggered against her, gasping. But when he lifted his head again, the relief on his face was close to ecstasy.

“You have my profound gratitude,” he breathed, flexing his arm. “So does this mean we have a bargain?”

Ivy’s thoughts and feelings were in a tangle, and she had no idea how to reply. Had she really just helped one of her people’s oldest enemies? What would happen to her, if anyone found out? She sat down heavily on an outcropping. When she’d left the cavern looking for answers about her mother, she’d never imagined it would turn out like this.

“I don’t know,” she said. “I don’t know what to do.”

And for the rest, you’ll have to wait until 1 March 2012! :)

Knife by R.J Anderson

vickijane:

Once upon a time, a fairy is born. She lives in an old oak tree at the bottom of a garden with the rest of the fairy folk. Never has she known a time when life hasn’t been hard, with many dangers and much adversity. But when she becomes the Hunter of the group and learns to do battle in the outside world, her adventures really take off…Don’t read this book if you’re expecting fairy dust - the last thing Knife is likely to wield is a magic wand…
This is a clever and well thought out faerie story which combines traditional fairy lore, the modern world and an emotional core that I wasn’t expecting.
Recommended.

Book 98 of 100 - I don’t think I’m going to make the 100 by Saturday but I don’t think 98 books in a year is too bad!
