But even as he spoke footsteps pounded up the stairs, and a slim, dark-haired boy leaped up onto the landing, brandishing a fireplace poker like a sword. Cold iron ringed his fingers, braced his wrists, swung in cross-shape from a leather thong around his neck - an armour no faery spell could penetrate.
‘Let her go, Martin,’ he panted, leveling the poker.
A talented young human, the Empress had called Timothy, but regrettably prone to violence. Rhosmari knew it was true - and yet her heart beat faster at the sight of him, just the same.
P.171 Arrow by RJ Anderson
Actually drew this and lined it over a year ago. At the time I was experimenting with thicker lines and, as you can probably tell, it didn’t catch on. I did however like the energy and the slightly warped perspective that seems to focus on Timothy (either that or my eyes are just going funky from looking at it too long) that happened completely by accident.
I think it could almost be Rhosmari’s view of the scene.
To know more about what’s going on you’ll have to read RJ Anderson’s amazing Faerie Rebels series Knife, Rebel and Arrow.
Enjoy
Unsurprisingly, I completely and utterly adore this. It could indeed be from Rhosmari’s perspective, and it’s actually quite close in many ways to my own mental image of the scene, right down to the wallpaper and the character blocking. (The portrait on the wall is a lovely touch too!)
I amended two bits in the quoted material above, one a typo and the other one of the most upsetting errors that crept into the first edition — the line that ended up reading “her heart at the sight of him” instead of “her heart beat faster at the sight of him”, even though I’d already caught and corrected that mistake in copyedits. *sob*
(And speaking of which, if anybody has a later edition of the book, could you let me know if it’s been corrected yet? Thanks.)
Anyway, the point of all this is — this is an amazing piece of fanart that makes me very happy, and am so thrilled to be able to share Street-Angel’s brilliant work with you all!
Not quite my mental image of Martin. Hair wrong style, bit too pouty-looking. But reminiscent enough of him to make me take notice.

FLUFFY FEETY TROUSERS
…I do not think Martin has considered the implications of having fluffy feety trousers. This may need to come up in some future book.
In other news, LOL.
Why, hello, Martin. It must be slightly inconvenient to be an ermine when there’s no snow, which is probably why he doesn’t take this particular shape that often. My current head canon (can authors have head canon for their own books?) says that he can’t change colour and become a stoat, even though they’re the same animal. Why? Not sure yet. I’ll have to ask him about it sometime.

So I appear to have turned Martin into a My Little Pony with this generator.
I don’t even know. I never played with MLPs as a kid. I don’t watch the show. IT WAS JUST IRRESISTIBLE SOMEHOW.
I will take requests for more faery ponies if people really want them.
